  • Fort Areno- An important rebel stronghold during the Great Civil War, it held the longest during the siege of Bridgetown. Local legend has it that when the king’s army came to sack the village, the mechanism that opened the gate broke, trapping the villagers outside. He managed to say with his final breath “Let the will of one stand against tyranny” before the gate crushed him. In his honor the people erected a statue of the man known from then on as “Matthew the Lifter”.
